CHRYSALIS
WHERE THE LAND AND SEA COME TOGETHER
This most recent body of work is a physical homage to the ever changing interplay of land and sea, a capturing of the coastal forces within ceramic. These frozen moments in porcelain allow us to contemplate geologic time: The erosion, polishing, revealing and inevitable reconfiguration of the land.
The confluence of land, sea and sky have played an important role in Gomez' work to date. With Chrysalis, the raw environmental elements are dragged to the surface and pitched headlong into the form, the melée of the storm wrapped bases foment under and onto the lucid silk surfaces of the towering porcelain which itself reveals atop an opening beckoning us back down to the eternal beginning.
Each vessel is hand thrown in porcelain, its surface bifurcated between a base built up through stained slips that create agate-like wave formed strata and the upper surface which is meticulously crafted, resulting in a smooth and curving surface. Like a chrysalis, the vessels embody both protection and exposure, evoking a quiet space for transformation.
